Straight Bets – There are 3 types of straight bets in horse racing.
Win – Placing a bet on a horse that will win. If the horse wins, you win the horse bet.
Place – For a horse to place, it must come in either first or second in the race. This wager gives you two chances to win.
Show – For a horse to show, it must win first, second, or third place. |
Quinella - This is a bet is on the first and second place horse in a given race in any order.
Box Quinella – A box Quinella is where you choose more than two selections. You can choose as many runners as you like from the same race, however two of the selections must place First and Second in any order.
Standout Quinella – A standout Quinella is where you select as many runners as you like from the same race, however you must nominate the runner you think will place First or Second. |
Trifecta – This bet is on the first, second, and third places in a given race in the correct order.
Standout Trifecta – A standard trifecta bet is where you select as many runners as you like from the same race, however you must nominate the runner you think will place First, Second or Third.
Box Trifecta – A box trifecta is a bet where you to choose three or more selections. You can choose as many runners as you like from the same race, however three of the selections must place First, Second and Third. |
Daily Double: This is a bet on the first place position in two consecutive races, generally the first two of the day. The bettor must correctly pick both races to win.
Pick Six: This is a bet on the first place position of six consecutive races, generally the last six. In the event nobody wins, the winning pool is split between those correctly picking five (or less if nobody picked five) and a carryover to the next pick six pool.

The Melbourne Cup

Blue Diamond Stakes
The Blue Diamond Stakes is Victoria, Australia's premier Group One thoroughbred event for two-year olds. Horses race for AUD $1 million in prize money with the winner receiving $600,000. The race is run over 1200 metres at Caulfield Racehorse in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia.

Golden Slipper
The Golden Slipper is the world's richest horse race for two-year-olds held during the Autumn Racing Carnival in Sydney. It was first run in 1957 and won by celebrated racehorse Todman. The Golden Slipper is run over 1200m at Rosehill Gardens, close to Parramatta, in western Sydney.

The Cox Plate is a thoroughbred race held annually in late October by the Moonee Valley Racing club. The race is for three year olds and over and is run over 2040 metres on turf.

Caulfield Cup
The first Caulfield Cup run was in 1879 and the first horse to win was Newminster. It is held annually by the Melbourne Racing Club. The race if for three year olds and over. Performances in the Caulfield Cup are one of the possible qualification methods for a run in the Melbourne Cup.

Across the Board – A bet on a horse to win, place and show.
Also Eligible – A horse officially entered, but not permitted to start unless the field is reduced by scratches below a specified number.
Blanket Finish – Horses that finish a race so closely that you could throw a blanket over them.
Blowout – A final workout before a race to sharpen a horse’s speed.
Bridge Jumper – Someone who makes large bets on short-priced favourites.
Caller – One who calls the running positions of horses in horse races.
Checked – A horse that is pulled up by its jockey when it is cut off in a race.
Claiming – Buying a horse out of a race for an entered price.
Daily Double - This is a bet on the first place position in two consecutive races, generally the first two of the day. The bettor must correctly pick both races to win.
Disqualification - Change of order of finish by officials for an infraction of the rules.
Distanced – A horse that is well beaten and finishes a great distance behind the winner.
Eligible – A horse that is qualified to run in a race
Exacta - This bet is on the first and second place horses in a given race in the correct order.
Graduate – A first time winner of a race. Either a horse or jockey.
Handicap- Race for which a handicapper assigns weights to be carried.
In the Money – Finishing in first, second, or third place.
Maiden – A horse that has not won a race.
On the Board – Finishing a horse in the top four.
Pick Six – A type of wager in which the winners of all the included races must be selected.
Place – This is a bet that the chosen horse will finish first or second.
Quarter – One quarter of a mile.
Quinella – A bet in which first two finishers must be picked, but a payoff is made no matter which one wins first and which one wins second.
Scratch – To be taken out of a race.
Show – Third position at the finish of a race.
Stretch Runner – A horse that finishes the race fast.
Tight – Ready to Race.
Trifecta – A horse racing bet that picks the first three finishers of the race in exact order.
Trip – The horse’s race.
Triple Crown - In the United States, the Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes and Belmont Stakes. In England the 2,000 Guineas, Epsom Derby and St. Leger.
